"No matter how good you are, you want to get better and I'm not a good enough player to not try as hard as I can to improve.
"I don't know if I'm going to get any more opportunities before the year ends but if I do, I'll try to make the most of it," he said.
With four Championship matches still to come in September, it is not out of the question that Hughes will earn a first team recall before the end of this season, especially if he can follow his century for the seconds this week with another big score or two.

"This year has just been more mental than anything else and when you add my technical game into it, you are almost batting with your head all over the place. It's just been a learning experience."
The player appreciates that and has been through more than his share of introspection this summer.
This has been a horrible season for the young Anguillan out of the Championship side since April, dropped before the end of the t20 campaign and not selected at all for the 50 over competition.
It was his first century of the summer in any cricket and his first for Derbyshire since that monumental 270 not out against Yorkshire at Headingley in April 2013.
Monday, Chesney Hughes took an important step back towards his best.
"It's my first hundred of the summer and we're in August. That says a lot about the year."
"I've always believed I can play; it's just a case of staying positive and confident in my game and working on trying to improve.
"I enjoyed my time with Shiv. Our friendship has grown since he has been at Derby and he has helped me quite a Nike Uptempo Obsidian Gum bit," he added.
"But if that doesn't come, I need to make sure that when next season comes around, if I get three games like I did at the start of this year in the Championship, I need to make sure I am better equipped to capitalise on the opportunity.
Without question, the ability is there. And he is still only 23.
"I'm still trying to enjoy it and when I get successes working on my game, then that feels just as good as scoring runs. If I'm in the nets and things are working for me, it feels just as good as walking out to bat and scoring runs.
"I've not been able to work a lot with Shiv technically because he's a completely different player but what he does offer is a model into how to work hard and it was good to have him around."
"I'd have liked a bit more patience from the coaches but I've got to learn quickly and I understand that, as a young player. Tough schooling is fair enough, basically, and that's where I'm at.
But that is not his top priority. Hughes knows he has got to get his game back on track for the long term.
"I'll try to continue what I have been doing and not think too much about the end result in terms of runs and wickets. If I get runs, then well done and if I don't, I need to ensure that I am doing the right things before I go out to bat.
Ability is not the issue in spite of tough year for Chesney Hughes
"He always rings to make sure that I'm thinking right and staying positive. He reassures me that I can play and tells me things that are very simple but are things you need to hear.
"I would still love an opportunity to play in the first team and I still think that given an opportunity, I would do well.
An important part of Hughes' education has been from spending time in a changing room with West Indies great Shivnarine Chanderpaul for the last two seasons.
"It's the end of August, I'm playing in the second team and getting my first hundred. I need to improve quickly and I understand that.

"It's just little things I'm working on to get better. It's not a case of learning how to bat again, it's just little things that I think would aid my game.
"Like any other day, I started off playing well and just managed to carry on this time, giving myself the confidence and the reassurance that I'm good enough.
Yet here is a batsman who was the county's youngest ever centurion when he hit 118 against Gloucestershire in 2010 aged 19 and his unbeaten 270 last year, as well as being his fifth hundred in first class cricket, was the second highest individual innings in the club's history.
Hughes' run drought has been a baffler. He has averaged 10.80 from five Championship innings and managed only 96 runs in nine t20 innings at a modest strike rate of 105.49, which means he got nowhere and didn't get there fast either.
"I've always managed to get big scores and I've always managed to play decent innings but I've always struggled with my consistency," he admitted.
